ONLINE FOREDRAG OM AUTISTISK MASKERING MED DR. AMY PEARSON & KIERAN ROSE
Deconstructing Misconceptions around Masking: Going Beyond Social Strategies
A live online lecture that delves into the intricate world of Autistic Masking, presented by Dr. Amy Pearson and Kieran Rose.
Pearson and Rose will challenge prevailing misconceptions surrounding Autistic masking, debunking the notion that it is merely a social strategy employed to 'blend in' with neurotypical individuals. Instead, they explore the developmental social context that fosters impression management, considering an individual's response to stigma or trauma. Through an intersectional approach, this talk examines how autistic identity interacts with other aspects of selfhood.
As Rose and Pearson explain, Masking is a nuanced form of identity management involving the conscious or unconscious suppression and projection of aspects of one's identity and actions in response to external factors across development.
This phenomenon is frequently observed across marginalised groups; and for Autistic people, it contributes to adverse outcomes including increased prevalence of suicidality, exhaustion, burnout, and mental health difficulties.
This talk aims to shed light on the most up-to-date evidence in this field, fostering a deeper understanding for both individuals with an interest in autism and professionals across various domains.
